Traditional or Not for V-Day Reads

As V-Day arrives, many people find themselves at odds. Do they really want to celebrate a so-called "hallmark" holiday?

Are you in a new relationship and stressing over what's appropriate? Long-term couple that doesn't care? Single with nothing to do? We are here to offer a few suggestions to those who aren't sure what to do.

Are you single and looking for a date? Come down for a blind date... with a book! You'll find them provocatively perched on the counter wrapped in crisp brown paper with a few words to entice you into an evening of reading on the front.

Or maybe you're the type who can burn water. We've got you covered! Check out our cookbooks, we have everything from grilling guides to a plethora of the renown Jean Paré. Is your special someone looking to take their kitchen game to the next level? There are a few technical guides for the excellent home cook to make use of.

There's also never a shortage of crafting books, whether that's knitting and crochet patterns to stencilling and beading.

Now my favourite books with romance, not romances themselves (there's totally a distinction) tend to run either to the tragic or absurd. Whether it's a Mercedes Lackey making me cry my eyes out over Vanyel yet again or Christopher Moore giving me a nice ab workout, I'm sure we've got something on the shelf to tickle your fancy.

Now for a list of our favourite anti-Romance reads here at the store in no particular order:

  • American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis Corporate greed and murder? What better way to set the mood.

  • Kiss of the Spider Woman - Manuel Puig Despite the romance inherent in the footnotes and Molina’s outlook and Valentin’s belief in his cause, the tragedy far outweighs everything else.

  • Anything Mac Bolan. Okay. There is kind of romance in these things? But really it’s mostly just high octane adventure and explosions.

  • Misery - Stephen King Do I really need to explain why?

  • The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire - Edward Gibbon All that history, all that hubris… all those pages!
